Christian Service
PERSONAL AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Saint Francis Catholic Academy is committed to the education of the whole person. As a Catholic school, it is our unique mission to guide young people in developing a Christian social consciousness and a commitment to a life of justice and peace.
The Gospel mandates that we serve our neighbor, especially the most vulnerable in society. In addition, participation in the Christian Service Program aids students attempting to qualify for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship.
Credit for participation in parish liturgical celebrations (e.g. altar serving, ushering, lector, choir) are all laudable activities and may be applied to the service requirement ONLY AFTER the minimum requirement of 25 hours has been completed.
When in doubt about the appropriateness of a service opportunity, and in order to prevent unnecessary misunderstandings or disappointments, students are encouraged to FIRST discuss their plans with their Theology teacher. In the case of any dispute, resolution may be sought by contacting the Campus Ministry staff.
Common areas that are not eligible as service hours:
- Daily obligations and house chores
- Regular acts in liturgical practice for weekly service (altar serving, singing in the choir, etc)
Community Service
Committed to the religious education of the whole person, we believe that it is our unique mission to guide young people in developing a Christian social conscience and a commitment to a life of justice and peace. Participation in the combination of our educational and service/action programs will enable our students to accomplish this goal.
Religious education does not stop at the threshold of the classroom door. Rather, the Gospel calls us to extend compassion and service to those in need. In order to reinforce this value, each student is required to perform 25 hours of Christian service annually. Service opportunities are plentiful in the Gainesville area and are advertised by fliers posted in Theology classrooms.
Our Campus Ministry staff serves as our Christian Service Coordinator and acts as the liaison between SFCA and service organizations. They assist our service clubs in identifying service projects.
